McDonough GA -- Firefighters and bikers from all over the southeast are joining forces to benefit a member of the Henry County Fire Department who is fighting for his life.
Chapter 11 of the Red Knights motorcycle club -- representing Henry, Pike and Spalding Counties -- is hosting a charity motorcycle ride on March 31 to benefit firefighter Britt Cauthen of Barnesville. Cauthen, 29, was diagnosed on Feb. 14 with stage 4 pancreatic cancer, as well as cancer of the liver. In the days that have followed, a determined Cauthen has fought to beat the disease, according to Capt. David Adams of Henry County. Cauthen is “fighting tooth and nail” despite finding out recently that the cancer is inoperable.“He’s got an amazing attitude,” said Adams.
“As a paramedic, I know the problem and what I need to do to fight it,” said Cauthen, a fireman for two years. “I’m treating it as a medical condition.”
Cauthen will begin chemotherapy on March 12. He said having a positive outlook on the situation has helped him, his wife Christy, and his daughters Rebecca and Madison, to cope with the difficult time before them. Still, he admits that his wife is “pretty much holding us together” and that he has good and bad days, but that the illness has served to strengthened their bond.
Adams said that people who have heard about Cauthen’s illness have come together to pledge their involvement in the charity effort.
“We’ve got support from riders as far away as Dalton,” Adams said.
An appreciative Cauthen added that he has received e-mails from people in different states who are keeping him in their thoughts.
“I know about half of the people who are coming to the motorcycle ride,” said Cauthen. “The other half is just part of the brotherhood of the firefighter.”
Cauthen said that he has been amazed at how that brotherhood “comes together and takes care of each other.”
County Battalion Chief Joe White sent an e-mail to firefighters notifying them of the event and asking for their help in the effort in the form of donations, volunteers and word-of-mouth. He said that under normal circumstances, it takes about three months to put together such an event but that they are going to try to do it in four weeks.
The ride will begin at Outdoor Powersports, Inc., located at 755 Industrial Blvd., in McDonough, continuing through Henry County and ending at Double D Tavern in McDonough, according to Capt. David Adams who said that charity events like this are not new to the Red Knights, but that this one hits closer to home.
“We did six charity rides last year,” said Adams. “This is the first one we’ve put together for one of our own.”
Adams said that the event will include raffles, door prizes and an auction, and that the Red Knights are currently seeking a live band to perform at the event.
“We’ll have tons of really good prizes,” said Adams, including a $100 gift certificate to Bass Pro Shop, a helmet and a handcrafted knife.
In addition, the event will include a 50/50 drawing, with half of the winnings generated from ticket sales -- at $1 per ticket -- going to the holder of the winning ticket and the other half going to the Britt Cauthen Fund.
