(KSDK Channel 5) - For a soldier from Edwardsville, Ill., it was his dream to become a U.S. Army Ranger and to serve his country. Army Spc. Ryan Garbs, 20, died doing what he loved. He was killed on Feb. 18 with six other soldiers in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan. On Tuesday, family and friends said their final goodbyes. As the body of Spc. Garbs arrived on the campus of Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, members of the Patriot Guard Riders lined the streets to show their support. "I think (his family) will focus on the joy that he's been for them and the blessing that he's been for them and the fact that he lived the life that he wanted," said family spokesperson Aleana Hiles. That included giving up the sports he loved while a student at Edwardsville High School to begin his own training to become an Army Ranger. "He was a freshman when Sept. 11 occurred. When he was a sophomore in high school, he gave up his sports -- and he was an outstanding sportsman," said Hiles. While she didn't know Garbs, SIUE International Studies Professor Denise DeGarmo brought her whole class to help support the family and give students a lesson on reality. "This young man was part of this community, and it makes it real for my students to understand there's a human toll whenever any country goes to war," said DeGarmo. Garbs was buried with full military honors at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in south St. Louis County. |
