Rick Grayson, with the Christian Motorcycle Association, drove all the way from Hattiesburg, Miss., to attend the benefit in Olive Branch for Morgan Shaw, shot in the head and left to die behind an abandoned Marshall County home.
"Yesterday was the first I'd heard of her," said Grayson, 51, a red bandana tied around his head and glasses shading his eyes. "I read it on an e-mail. The Lord put it on me to be here. My heart bleeds for this girl."
Two events were held Saturday in Olive Branch to benefit Morgan, abducted on July 22 from her home and rescued 20 hours later by a sheriff who doggedly pressured a suspect as to her whereabouts.
Mitchell Ray, an Olive Branch bar owner, says he knows the family and was stirred to help organize the biker event.
A second Saturday event at the Shriners building also benefited Morgan. Exactly how much had been raised through an auction, raffle and sales of food hadn't been determined.
Morgan is at Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center recovering from a gunshot wound to the head. Proceeds will go toward her medical expenses.
Becky Spain, 40, of Southaven, who lost a "slow riding" bike game Saturday, said donations were made by everyone who participated in the games.
"We all gave," she said. "It all goes to the baby. It's a good cause. Man upstairs is watching after that baby."
The event was held at 7852 Craft, across from the former Homer Skelton Ford dealership. Early on, more than 100 motorcycles were parked in front of the former bingo hall as people mulled about inside to look at items for auction.
On the lot, vendors sold T-shirts and cooked barbecue, hotdogs and hamburgers. Boars Night Out BBQ team alone cooked and sold 64 butts by midafternoon.
The event was expected to last into the night, and Ray expected up to 1,000 bikers to participate. He said he would know today how much money had been raised for Morgan's care.
