Bikers Take A Ride To Help Spread Holiday Cheer
Motorcyclists from all over Delmarva revved their engines for the third annual Toys For Tots toy run. Santa led the parade of bikes from the Harley Davidson in Berlin to the American Legion in Salisbury. It's only October, but organizer Clay Tarpley says the ride gets people ready for the giving season.
"It kind of kicks off the toy collection for Toys for Tots and it kind of gives the community a wake up to say 'Hey, the holidays are coming.'"
Over 300 bikers brought either a toy or gave $10 for a kid in need.
Toys for Tots coordinator Ed Hearthway says everything donated will be given to families whose children would not otherwise have something to open during the holidays.
"Last year I know that we collected and distributed over 9,000 toys to 4,200 children on the lower shore."
And while the day is fun, Mike Wheatley says they don't forget the deeper meaning.
"For the kids. To ride for the kids, mainly that's all it's about," he said. "It'll mean a lot. If they ain't got nothing, at least we're giving them something. That's what this group is for, so I think it's awesome."
Toys for Tots will be collecting and distributing toys from now through the Christmas season.
The motorcycle run raised over $1,000 dollars for Toys for Tots. The American Legion Family Post #64 in Salisbury will be sponsoring a cruise-in for Toys For Tots on November 12th.
